First run, step by step

Both operating systems warn about DeskSquad the first time you open it. That’s expected for a small independent app without a paid code-signing certificate — it isn’t a sign anything is wrong with the download.

Windows

  1. 1. Run the downloaded .exe.
  2. 2. Windows SmartScreen shows “Windows protected your PC”. This appears because DeskSquad hasn’t bought a Microsoft signing certificate yet, not because of anything the app does.
  3. 3. Click More info, then Run anyway.

macOS

  1. 1. Open the downloaded .dmg and drag DeskSquad into Applications.
  2. 2. First launch is blocked by Gatekeeper: “DeskSquad can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.”
  3. 3. In Finder’s Applications folder, right-click (or Control-click) DeskSquad → Open → Open again to confirm. If that option isn’t there, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to Security, and choose Open Anyway.
  4. 4. DeskSquad asks for Accessibility permission on first run — it needs this to read Dock/taskbar icon positions so characters can hide behind the real ones. Grant it in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.

On both platforms, look for the DeskSquad icon in the system tray (Windows) or menu bar (macOS) once it’s running — that’s where you pick a character, pause, or quit.
